The Gospel of Matthew – Fall 2025

Deirdre Good will be teaching the following course on the Gospel of Matthew this Fall.

Course Description:
A critical reading of the Gospel of Matthew, exploring its Christology (presentation of who Jesus
is), structure, Jewish identity, and teachings. We will also attend to Matthew’s theological, congregational/ecclesial significance today, and its understandings of discipleship and mission.
And we will look at passages from Matthew as they appear in the lectionary starting in Advent 2025.

Class Dates:
The class meets in person and online, 11 a.m. – noon on five Fridays: November 21, 28, December 5, 19, and January 2, 2026. (I am away in NYC on December 12 at a commemorative event for Professor Phyllis Trible).

Class Procedure:
Each class has a date, title, topics for discussion, and online resources for you to follow by
clicking. Please read the assigned passage from Matthew for each week first, and second, the
on-line resources. That way, each class can be more like a seminar discussion, not a lecture. I
will refer to the NRSVue translation and the Greek text in class, but you are welcome to read any
translation.
