A Saga of St. Margaret’s Kneeler
On Sunday, April 22, a beautiful kneeler honoring St.Margaret’s was dedicated by the Very Rev. Dr. Benjamin
Shambaugh, Dean of the Cathedral in Portland. The Celtic Cross in our garden, with lovely day lilies at its base, was the theme, with the bay and sailing vessels as background.
Seven years ago, at a Diocesan Convention at Sunday River, Susan Mayer purchased a Cathedral kneeler starter kit with basic directions and materials, including the requisite deep red background thread that is used on all Cathedral kneelers. The project had some dormant periods over the years but the results are stunning. It honors St. Margaret’s life and celebrates our Centennial.
Needle workers included Marcy Otley (an expert needle crafter from the Belfast area), Marian Fletcher, Susan Mayer, and, from the Cathedral Kneelers group, Jeri Edgar and Anna Messmer.
The dedication service was joyful, beginning with the procession led by a bagpiper piping, a rare event. Ten kneelers were dedicated from across the Diocese. Each was a work of love, praise and beauty. What a joy to be there. Our kneeler will stay at the cathedral (it is number 379) and be used by worshipers. Look for it the next time you worship there.
