Easter Week

Maundy Thursday
“Maundy” comes from “mandatum” — commandment. We gather to remember Jesus’ commandment that we love one another as he has loved us. On this special night, we will gather in the parish hall for a pot-luck Mediterranean supper and Eucharist. Maribeth Payne will be our preacher. At the conclusion of the supper, Eucharist, and foot washing, we will go into the church for the stripping of the altar and an all-night vigil at the altar of repose.

All night vigil at the Altar of Repose
The Church will remain open all night so you can come at any time during the night to pray silently as the disciples would have done at the Mount of Olives. As we remove the reserved sacrament from the aumbry and take it to the altar of repose, we remember the movement of Our Lord from the house of the Last Supper to the Garden of Olives, where He underwent His agony and where He would be betrayed by Judas and arrested to be brought before Pilate prior to his crucifixion.

Easter Eve Family Service at 5PM in the church
This simple service of Taizé songs and stories from Holy Week is a chance to pray with Jesus and each other as we await the resurrection.

Festive Easter Eucharist at 8AM and 9:45AM.

News from Choir Director

“Chris is looking for folks who might be interested in leading the singing of the Psalm and Canticle during 9:45 morning prayer services. If you’ve never done it before, he can teach you and would be happy to work with you when your schedule allows to prepare you in advance. See Chris after any service he’s playing or reach out via email at [email protected] for more information.”

“Do you play an instrument and would like to help out during Sunday services every now and again (or more frequently)? Please reach out to Chris after any service he’s playing or reach out via email at [email protected] for more information.”

News from our Rector

Dear Beloved of God,

It has been such fun exploring so many different options for music leadership at St. Margaret’s, and we have finally made it official:

Chris Donley will serve as our director of music and our seasonal adult choir director. He will work with the liturgy team and the rector to shape our worship throughout the year and call together a choir for Advent and Christmas. He will also teach us how to sing the psalms! You all sing so wonderfully together for worship, and I am really looking forward to growing with you in song. Chris will be our principle organist, playing twice per month.

Davide Delano will serve as an assistant organist, playing at least one Sunday per month and accompanying the choir.

Ruth Gelsinger will also serve as an assistant organist, and will play at least one Sunday per month.

Let us give them a resounding welcome!

Making a Joyful Noise Unto the Lord . . .

Will You Donate?

The Hymnal Lift Every Voice and Sing is a collection that was published in 1993 by the Church Hymnal Corporation as a supplement to The Hymnal 1982. It contains 234 hymns and songs, and thirty-six selections of service music for the Holy Eucharist. The music is drawn from the following genres: Negro spirituals, traditional and contemporary gospel songs, adapted Protestant hymns, missionary and evangelistic hymns, and service music and Mass settings in both traditional and gospel styles.

We currently own about fifteen copies, and we would like to purchase 50 more so that the entire congregation can have access to this wonderful and joyful collection of liturgical music. To do that, we need to raise $1,250.

If this is exciting to you, please make your donation by September 15 with LEVAS in the memo line of your check, and let’s get singing!

Photos from Holy Week

We enjoyed a robust week of worship, prayer and fellowship.

The Altar Guild was prepared for Palm Sunday, but Mother Nature had other ideas. Church was cancelled for the safety of all.

ST. MARGARET’S EPISCOPAL CHURCH – HOLY WEEK SCHEDULE

St. Margaret’s will hold several services to mark Holy Week from Palm Sunday, March 24, through Easter on March 31.

Worshippers are asked to gather in the church parish hall, 95 Court St., by 9:45 a.m. on Sunday March 24 to receive palm fronds and participate in an opening prayer.  They will then be led outside by the Rev. Barbara Briggs for a short procession into the church for the service, which will include a dramatic reading of The Passion.

Maundy Thursday, March 28, will be observed with an informal Middle Eastern meal at 6 p.m. in St. Margaret’s parish house, 95 Court St.  Participants are asked to bring a simple item such as nuts, hummus, dried fruit or pita bread to share at the Agape dinner.  The meal will be followed by Eucharist and optional foot-washing, symbolic of  Christ’s servanthood in washing the feet of his disciples, and a brief service in the church for the Stripping of the Altar and start of the Easter Vigil.

Good Friday’s service at St. Margaret’s will be at 6 p.m. to accommodate those who are employed during the day.

St. Margaret’s will join with other Mid-coast Episcopal churches on Saturday March 30 for an Easter Vigil service and celebration at St. John the Baptist Episcopal Church in Thomaston at 7 p.m. The sermon will be delivered by the Rev. Paul Briggs, Interim Rector of St. Thomas Episcopal Church, Camden.

Easter Sunday, March 31, will be celebrated at St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church at two festive services at 8 and 9:45 a.m.  This will mark the return of two Sunday morning services that will continue every week until November.
