A sad farewell

This Sunday we will be celebrating Mary Provo and John Cuozzo as well as bidding them farewell and wishing them well on their move to southern Maine. We hope to see them in the next few weeks and later too, after they are settled in their new home.

John and Mary have been very active in our parish – in the choir, as Eucharistic Lay Ministers, on the Vestry and Discernment Committee, leading Adult Ed sessions and much, much more!

Come for a special coffee hour!

A trip through South India

img_8483-300x225-6678965Join us on Saturday, June 16 at 6 p.m. as we share foods from India at our Global Cuisine potluck.  (If you don’t like indian – bring something of your choice).  Chris Urick and Nan Cobbey took plenty of pictures and brief videos of their time in India and will have a show running during dinner. After dinner they will tell about some of the interesting encounters they had.

Don’t miss this adventure. If you want to see how they prepare some of the recipes they learned, come earlier, at 4:30,  and watch Nan and Chris prepare five or more Indian dishes in St. Margaret’s kitchen.  They plan to make Chicken Vindaloo, two kinds of dal, a special lemon rice with peanuts and curry leaves, and a sweet/sour eggplant sautéed with tamarind (if suitable eggplants are available), and parathas – a simple bread made from just water, salt and flour.  You can expect to be served a “mango lassie” as well. That’s a popular Indian beverage made with yoghurt.

Everyone is invited. Bring a dish to share, your own beverage and perhaps a friend or two.  Non-cooks are always welcome to provide ice cream or to help with clean up.

Al Ahil Arab Hospital, Gaza

From our Bishop – asking for support of the Al Ahil Arab Hospital in Gaza.

Dear Friends,

4eb09387-b269-4d44-9179-8055e82c28be-4855903As I’ve watched the tragedy in Gaza unfold over the past several days, my prayers have gone immediately  to the ministry and care offered to all people by the Al Ahli Arab Hospital in Gaza City. The doctors, nurses, and staff are truly on the front lines in meeting the need of those injured in the violence of recent days.

This ministry of the Episcopal Diocese of Jerusalem and the Middle East holds its doors open to people of all faiths and ethnicities and operates under extreme circumstances and limited resources even in those times that pass for “normal” in occupied Palestine.

The Diocese of Maine, through its International Outreach budget line, has made donations to the the Al Ahli Hospital since 2012. Indeed, if you were at our Convention a few years ago, you’ll remember watching the video posted below that bears witness to the work of the hospital.

Last night I received an update from the American Friends of the Episcopal Diocese of Jerusalem (AFEDJ):

cda30f70-f0ff-4c04-adc3-c0a1c17b8cc9-9589820

Suhaila Tarazi, the director of Ahli Arab Hospital in Gaza, reports that Ahli is implementing an emergency response to receive trauma cases and has configured an emergency wing with 24 additional beds. The staff is on extended shifts to treat the injured and wounded. Ahli surgeons are treating serious wounds and complex limb injuries.

Ahli Hospital needs immediate and substantial financial support to respond to the catastrophe in Gaza. They need to obtain emergency medicine and medical supplies and fuel for generators.

Suhaila wants you to know that while the resources of Ahli Hospital are stretched to the limit, the hospital staff is working around the clock, treating
and healing victims of the violence. This includes many children who have family members, friends and neighbors who are dead or injured. These children are suffering, and Ahli Hospital is providing them compassionate counseling and psycho-social therapy.

With your help, Ahli stands as a powerful example of Christian witness in this place of desperation and unimaginable horror. Thanks to you, Ahli Hospital sends a message of hope and love.

I encourage you to join me in support the ministry of Al Ahli Arab Hospital with your prayers, both your personal prayers and in your congregations, and, as you are able, with a donation.

You may donate through AFEDJ’s secure donation site.

Thank you for your generosity on behalf of our brothers and sisters in Gaza.

The Rt. Rev. Stephen T. Lane
Bishop of Maine

Camp Bishopswood Scholarships

The Women of St. Margaret’s are hoping for applications from members and friends of our church for Canp Bishopswood scholarships.  We offer 50% “camperships” for a one week stay and full scholarships for “mini-camp”, a three day experience for younger or first time campers.

If you are interested for a friend or family member, please e-mail Cindy Frost at [email protected] for an application.

A Bishopswood experience is a life affirming event.  We hope our children experience it.

Fair Trade Coffee is Back!

One of the initiatives from the Year of Nurture gathering was to reintroduce fair trade coffee at St. Margaret’s.
Mary Rackmales will have a sample on Sunday and we will start with the opportunity for parishioners to order, pre-pay, and purchase fair-trade coffee. Mary will share more information about this during our Engagement Party on Sunday.

Vestry Highlights – May meeting

The Vestry discussed and took action on the following at the meeting on Tuesday,  May 8:

  • Heard from Don Cox, Buildings Chairperson about projects underway and planned for our buildings.
  • Dennis Urick, Wayne Kraeger and men from the Re-Entry Center cleared the church basement of dirt and debris. They will also put in a french drain to help with water seepage into the basement.
Acoustical tiles are being planned for the ceiling in the social hall, to be installed by volunteers
The inspector for the sprinkler system observed some minor issues that need to be addressed. Don is following up.           Plans and ideas continue for repairing the sagging emergency exit door in the connector.
  • A “mini-discernment committee” comprising four Vestry members (Chris Urick, Ken Taylor, Kristen Burkholder and Faye Ward) was formed to compile information and to liaise with the Diocese regarding the hiring of an Interim Priest. This committee will make recommendations for the Vestry’s vote and approval.
  • Voted to become a sponsor and support Belfast Has Pride event on Saturday, June 9 at noon.
  • Selected Faye Ward as GBAM representative.
  • Elaine Bielenberg reported on the Year of Nurture gathering held in April.
  • The Vestry hopes for good turn out and results from our Engagement Party – all part of our “Moving Forward Together” initiative.
